Tools - Mainspring Length Gauge JMW 1082

 

 

The length of a clock mainspring is extremely important for the correct functioning of the clock and to give the correct number of turns of the barrel. This gauge will determine the correct length for a given barrel diameter without any need to carry out any calculations. The method is quite ingenious, and the tool was designed by Bill Smith of America, who received a Gold Medal for its design.

 

Micrometer Centring Device JMW 758

 

The centring of the cutter to the work when wheel and pinion cutting is carried out is not an easy operation, unless the cutter is at the exact centre line, particularly on pinions the result will be leaning teeth or leaves. There are a number of traditional methods used, all of which rely on guesswork. The Micrometer Centring Device will ensure the cutter is on dead-centre every time.

Small Centring Micrometer Tool JMW 1588

 

Small centring micrometer, suitable for centring on the watchmaker's lathe, supplied mounted on a 8mm arbor, complete with setting pin. With either Imperial or metric micrometer head. Supplied in a fitted and lined case.

 

Hairspring Colleting & Studding Tool JMW 1083

 

This compact and neat little tool is most useful when colleting, studding and straightening hairsprings. Also included is a brass spire which acts as a gallows to enable the balance cock and balance to be safely suspended whilst work is carried out on the movement. Three small tapered collet arbors are also supplied with the tool.

Overhead Drive for The Small Lathe - JMW-361

This unit has been designed to enable light milling and drilling to be carried out on the small lathe with a milling spindle attached to a vertical slide or similar arrangement. One of its main uses is for driving a milling spindle for cutting clock wheels and pinions. The wide range of speeds available (150-4000 r.p.m.) makes the unit most suitable for this application. A complete construction article on this equipment commenced in the Model Engineer magazine, 20th November, 1981.

 

All the machining is quite straightforward and can be carried out on a 3ins lathe. When complete it makes a most indispensable accessory for the lathe. The versatility of the unit allows it drive the milling or drilling spindle in many positions, for example when the spindle is in an angular plane or for driving a cutting frame for wheel cutting or ornamental turning.
